Multiple league sources told The Athletic’s Tony Jones that Philadelphia 76ers assistant general manager Jameer Nelson is a serious contender to become the club’s next president of basketball operations. Nelson, third in the hierarchy behind former president Daryl Morey and general manager Elton Brand last season, reportedly handled duties that exceeded a typical No. 3 role and is viewed league-wide as an executive on the rise.
According to Jones, Nelson is the strongest in-house option in Philadelphia’s search. Even if the team selects someone else to replace Morey, sources said Nelson is expected to receive a promotion within the organization.
The Sixers’ candidate pool also includes Mike Gansey, Nick U’Ren, Trent Redden, and Matt Lloyd. Philadelphia’s request to interview Atlanta Hawks general manager Onsi Saleh was denied last week, Jones added.
Giannis Trade Outlook Unchanged
Speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show” earlier this week, ESPN’s Shams Charania said Giannis Antetokounmpo still believes a trade could ultimately benefit both himself and the Milwaukee Bucks. While the two-time MVP has not formally asked out, Charania noted Antetokounmpo has held that view “for a period of months,” and his stance remains the same.
Wizards Host Pre-Draft Prospects
The Washington Wizards brought in Michigan State guard Jeremy Fears and Miami (OH) guard Peter Suder for workouts this week, reports Adam Zagoria of NJ.com. Washington owns picks No. 51 and No. 60 in this year’s draft. ESPN currently ranks Fears 67th on its big board, while Suder is listed at No. 101.
Nets Weigh Point Guard Options at No. 6
Despite selecting point guards with their first two picks in the 2025 draft, the Brooklyn Nets could target Arkansas guard Darius Acuff with the sixth pick this year, writes C.J. Holmes of the New York Daily News. Last year’s rookies Egor Demin and Nolan Traore did not make an All-Rookie team, and while scouts have concerns about Acuff’s size and defense, he is viewed as a potential high-level scorer.
