The Philadelphia 76ers exited the playoffs on Sunday after a four-game sweep by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals, but rookie guard VJ Edgecombe’s postseason poise has the franchise optimistic about the future.
“Playing against the Celtics to now against New York, it was tricky. I was guarded differently,” Edgecombe said following the Game 4 loss. “Next year a team won’t ever leave me open … I’m going to work to make life easier for Tyrese Maxey and the rest of my teammates.”
The 6-4 guard added that he plans to sharpen his defensive versatility during the offseason. “For the rest of my career, I want to be able to guard whoever I have to guard,” he noted. “Next year I’m coming back better, stronger, faster, more athletic.”
Maxey seeks more off-ball opportunities
All-Star hopeful Tyrese Maxey—expected to claim his first All-NBA spot in 2025/26—struggled against New York’s traps and double-teams. He said he hopes Edgecombe’s growth as a primary ball-handler will allow him to operate away from the ball more frequently in 2026/27. “When you’re in front of the defense all the time, it gives the opponent opportunities to load up,” Maxey explained. “Great players can make plays on the ball but also play off the ball and use their gravity that way.”
Front-office outlook remains steady—for now
While a report from The Athletic suggested president of basketball operations Daryl Morey and head coach Nick Nurse could be in jeopardy, PhillyVoice’s Adam Aaronson does not expect ownership to act after the team’s first-round comeback against Boston. He acknowledged, however, that nothing is certain following the second-round sweep.
Key free agents and cap considerations
Philadelphia enters the summer with Quentin Grimes, Kelly Oubre Jr. and Andre Drummond hitting free agency. ESPN’s Bobby Marks projects the Sixers will likely exceed the first tax apron if they retain both Grimes and Oubre. Marks added that exploring trade scenarios for high-priced veterans Joel Embiid and Paul George to build a core around Maxey and Edgecombe would be ideal but remains improbable due to the substantial salaries owed to those aging stars.
Philadelphia’s offseason officially begins when free agency opens on July 1, giving Edgecombe, Maxey and the front office a narrow window to reshape the roster before training camp.
