Trade talks between the Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Clippers over forward Kawhi Leonard took place this past weekend, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
Fischer indicated that Toronto would rather construct an offer featuring Brandon Ingram than RJ Barrett to help match salaries if negotiations advance. The Raptors have been surveying the market for a high-profile addition to join Scottie Barnes after missing the playoffs last season.
Leonard guided Toronto to its only NBA championship in 2019 before signing with his hometown Clippers in free agency that summer. While Los Angeles has consistently signaled a desire to retain the five-time All-NBA selection, Leonard is entering the final year of his contract, and his next deal could exceed $50 million per season.
League sources told Fischer that, if moved, Leonard is believed willing to sign an extension with just two franchises—the Raptors or the San Antonio Spurs. For now, it remains unclear whether the current dialogue will lead to a formal trade offer.
