LeBron James’ Future With Lakers in Doubt, ESPN Reports

For the first time since LeBron James signed with Los Angeles eight years ago, there is “a legitimate chance” he will not suit up for the Lakers next season, ESPN reporter Tim Bontemps said on June 12.
Bontemps told ESPN that James, 41, could either retire or finish his career with another franchise. Free agency opens next month, and teams are already positioning themselves should the NBA’s all-time scoring leader become available.
Multiple Clubs Monitoring Situation
League sources have repeatedly linked the Cavaliers, Warriors and Lakers to the four-time NBA champion. ESPN and NBC Sports Bay Area have both reported that Golden State has shown interest in pairing James with Stephen Curry, while fans in Cleveland continue to discuss a possible homecoming.
Cleveland is coming off an Eastern Conference finals appearance and faces several financial decisions this summer, including an expected new deal for James Harden. Accommodating LeBron would require considerable roster and salary maneuvering.
Rich Paul Fielding Calls
Agent Rich Paul recently revealed that 10 to 12 teams have already contacted him regarding James’ status. Until the forward either recommits to Los Angeles, signs elsewhere or announces retirement, speculation around the NBA is expected to intensify.
Bontemps’ assessment marks the clearest indication yet that the league’s most prominent player could be wearing a different uniform—or none at all—when the 2026-27 season begins.
