The Toronto Raptors are expected to bring in former Houston Rockets head coach Stephen Silas as an assistant coach, according to Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca.
Silas, son of longtime NBA coach Paul Silas, owns two decades of assistant-coaching experience with Charlotte, New Orleans, Cleveland, Golden State and Dallas from 2000 to 2020. He was hired to run the Rockets in 2020, but his three-year tenure coincided with a full rebuild after the trades of Russell Westbrook and James Harden. Houston finished 59-177 (.250) during that stretch.
His most recent NBA role was a one-season stop on Monty Williams’s staff in Detroit, where the Pistons went 14-68 in 2023/24. Since leaving the league, Silas has coached Team USA in AmeriCup qualifying, the 2025 AmeriCup tournament, and 2027 World Cup qualifiers.
The move comes despite head coach Darko Rajaković and several assistants receiving four-year extensions earlier in the offseason. Grange reports that assistants Mike Batiste and James Wade will not return for the 2026/27 campaign; Batiste has accepted a lead assistant post with Panathinaikos in Greece.
Toronto has not announced a timeline for formally completing Silas’s hire.
