The Golden State Warriors brought in Kristaps Porzingis before this season’s trade deadline hoping his size and shooting could reignite their championship push. Injuries, however, restricted the 7-foot-3 forward to limited action, and his status with the franchise is now in question as free agency approaches.
Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus lists Porzingis among the NBA’s top potential “flight risks” this summer. According to Pincus, Golden State could struggle to keep the 28-year-old because of looming salary-cap pressure.
The Warriors are expected to explore additional high-profile signings. If they pursue a marquee name such as LeBron James, the team would operate under the league’s first tax apron. Pincus projects James could require the $15 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception, which would leave the Warriors with roughly $8 million to offer Porzingis—far below what he may command elsewhere.
Despite battling calf issues after arriving in San Francisco, Porzingis displayed the offensive versatility that made him a coveted trade target. Other franchises in need of frontcourt scoring and rim protection—including the Los Angeles Lakers and a possible return destination in Atlanta—are expected to monitor his availability.
For now, Porzingis remains under contract with Golden State, but his future will be one of the league’s prominent storylines when negotiations open this offseason.
