Denver’s attempt to land Celtics All-NBA wing Jaylen Brown is considered “highly unlikely,” a league source told MassLive, citing the Nuggets’ shortage of movable draft capital. Denver owns only one future first-round selection that can currently be traded.
While Brown remains on the radar of several clubs, attention has also shifted to two Nuggets forwards. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that the Celtics, Lakers, Heat, Clippers and Magic have all inquired about Cameron Johnson, and Bennett Durando of The Denver Post indicated the 28-year-old is expected to be moved within days. Boston has likewise monitored Aaron Gordon, sources told MassLive, reiterating past interest.
A potential structure sending Gordon and Johnson to Boston and Brown to Denver appears unworkable. Such a swap would not lower the Nuggets’ payroll, nor would it address the Celtics’ search for additional size. Boston is also viewed as unlikely to pursue guard Jamal Murray because of his maximum-salary contract, according to MassLive.
The Raptors have shown interest in Brown as well, but forward Scottie Barnes is considered off limits in any talks, per reports from both MassLive and HoopsHype.
Other clubs circling Brown
The Hawks, Clippers and Nets have conducted preliminary discussions with Boston about Brown, MassLive reported. Any offer from Portland would likely feature Jerami Grant, Scoot Henderson or Shaedon Sharpe along with first-round picks, sources told HoopsHype.
Gordon viewed as fallback option
If Portland cannot secure Brown, the Trail Blazers would pivot to Gordon, HoopsHype noted. The Heat also eyed Gordon as a contingency plan before successfully acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Herro talks before blockbuster
Before Tyler Herro was shipped to Milwaukee in the Antetokounmpo deal—and prior to Los Angeles re-upping Austin Reaves on a four-year max— the Lakers explored a package that would have sent Herro, rookie Kelel Ware and multiple firsts to Miami, according to HoopsHype. The Nets likewise checked on Herro’s price tag. Rival executives now wait to see whether the Bucks will keep or flip the 26-year-old guard.
