Brooklyn’s front office has zeroed in on restricted free agent forward Peyton Watson, according to Brian Lewis of the New York Post. The 22-year-old, who was vacationing in Europe with current Net and former Missouri teammate Michael Porter Jr. earlier this month, is one of the top names still available in free agency.

Watson’s market is complicated by Denver’s decision to issue a qualifying offer, allowing the Nuggets to match any deal he signs. League sources told Lewis that Denver is willing to explore sign-and-trade options if it cannot bridge what is described as a significant valuation gap. Watson is reportedly seeking at least $25 million annually, a figure that would push the Nuggets deep into the NBA’s new second-apron tax tier.

Brooklyn’s interest in Watson — along with a possible contract extension for Porter — falls under what Lewis labels the club’s “unfinished business.” The Nets still possess several extra future first-round picks, giving general manager Sean Marks additional flexibility to pursue upgrades later in the offseason.

Moves applauded around the league

Executives and agents interviewed by the Post believe DayRon Sharpe and Josh Minott provide solid value on the new deals they signed to remain in Brooklyn. Newly acquired guard Keon Ellis is viewed as a natural 3-and-D fit for a roster that lacked perimeter defenders.

Lewis adds that the agreement to trade for Julius Randle, move up five spots in the draft, and shed center Nic Claxton has been well received. “I actually really like it,” an agent representing multiple All-Stars told the Post. “He’s great and will be good with his own team.”

Rim protection remains a concern

Brooklyn struggled to guard the rim last season, and the issue could intensify with Sharpe poised for a larger role and Moritz Wagner tentatively slotted as his backup. League observers expect the Nets to search for a defensive anchor before the roster is finalized.

Front-office addition

David Koch Jr., whose family controls a 15% share of the Nets’ parent company, has been promoted to special assistant to the general manager. Koch spent the past two seasons as an entry-level basketball operations assistant and announced the move on LinkedIn.
