Nets and Michael Porter Jr. expected to open contract talks after Summer League

Brooklyn and forward Michael Porter Jr. are on track to begin formal negotiations on a contract extension once the NBA’s Las Vegas Summer League winds down, league sources told NBA TV’s Chris Haynes on Wednesday.

Haynes said Porter’s representative, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, plans to meet with the Nets “toward the tail end of Summer League or at the end of Summer League” to start the dialogue.

Porter, 28, is entering the final season of his current deal and will remain extension-eligible until June 30, 2027. Last week, Nets general manager Sean Marks told reporters the club is “not in a hurry” but emphasized the organization “values” Porter and hopes he remains in Brooklyn.

According to Haynes, if early conversations suggest an extension is unlikely, the sides could explore a separation, which might include the Nets shopping the 6-foot-10 shooter on the trade market. Several rival teams have already been monitoring Porter as a potential offseason trade target, HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported earlier this summer.

The Las Vegas Summer League concludes Sunday, clearing the calendar for both sides to meet and gauge whether a long-term deal is feasible.
