Nets’ Cap Room Positions Team to Influence Trade Deadline

The Brooklyn Nets enter the final stretch before the NBA trade deadline with about $15 million in salary-cap space, making them the league’s lone team with significant room to maneuver, ESPN’s Bobby Marks reported.

That flexibility allows Brooklyn to act as a third-team facilitator, absorb unwanted contracts or help luxury-tax contenders trim payroll. To deploy the space, however, the club would have to clear at least one roster spot.

Additional Tools

Beyond the cap space, the Nets also possess an $8.8 million trade exception. League rules stipulate that the exception becomes available only after Brooklyn exhausts its current cap room.

Trade Chips

Marks highlighted two Nets who could aid playoff hopefuls:

  • Cam Thomas – On pace to average 20 points for the third consecutive season, the 22-year-old guard is headed for unrestricted free agency after negotiations on a long-term extension stalled. Thomas is on a one-year contract and holds veto power over any trade, and any acquiring team would lose his Bird rights.
  • Michael Porter Jr. – In the midst of a career-best campaign at 25.9 points per game, the forward is under contract for two more years at $38.3 million and $40.8 million, respectively. Porter could offer instant scoring for a contender if Brooklyn opts to reshape its roster.

Long-Term Calculus

Dealing Porter could provide immediate assets but might complicate next season’s outlook, especially with the Houston Rockets holding swap rights to the Nets’ 2025 first-round pick. Retaining the forward could leave Brooklyn with up to $50 million in cap space this summer.

With those variables in play, the Nets could function as spoiler, facilitator or outright seller when the deadline arrives.
