The Brooklyn Nets added experienced front-court depth on draft night, selecting Iowa State forward Joshua Jefferson with the 28th overall pick.

The Minnesota Timberwolves formally made the selection on Brooklyn’s behalf as part of a pending three-team deal that would send Julius Randle to the Nets. That trade has not yet been finalized.

Four-Year Collegiate Track Record

Jefferson, 22, played four seasons of college basketball. He began at St. Mary’s, earning a starting job in his second year, then transferred to the Cyclones, where he started 70 games across the past two campaigns. As a senior he averaged 16.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.6 steals in 30.9 minutes, while converting 34.5 percent of his three-point attempts. His performance earned him a spot on the Associated Press All-America second team.

Role in Brooklyn

In Brooklyn, the 6-foot-8 forward is expected to vie for minutes behind Randle and Michael Porter Jr. The Nets view Jefferson’s ball-handling and passing skills as traits that could evolve into secondary playmaking duties at the NBA level.

Busy Draft for the Nets

Earlier in the evening, the Nets used the sixth pick to take Louisville guard Mikel Brown. With Jefferson joining the roster, Brooklyn now has seven first-round selections acquired over the past two drafts.
