The NBA offseason is already testing front offices in Los Angeles, New York and Brooklyn, each confronting a different set of financial and roster challenges.
Lakers
For the Los Angeles Lakers, the main offseason question remains the size and structure of LeBron James’s next contract. The 39-year-old forward is still producing at an elite level, and team officials must determine how much salary-cap space to devote to him while addressing other needs, particularly in the frontcourt.
Retaining restricted free agent guard Austin Reaves is considered a priority, but re-signing in-house talent would leave the roster largely unchanged. With limited flexibility, the Lakers must decide how to strengthen the supporting cast around James without sacrificing future maneuverability.
Knicks
Fresh off their first championship since 1973, the New York Knicks now face the financial aftermath of their title run. All five starters remain under contract, yet several key reserves, including center Mitchell Robinson and guard Landry Shamet, are approaching free agency.
The club is already projected to operate near the league’s luxury-tax aprons, making every new agreement more complicated. In addition, an extension for forward Karl-Anthony Towns is expected to become a prominent topic after his postseason impact underscored his long-term value.
Nets
The Brooklyn Nets enter the summer determined to accelerate their timeline. Because they do not control next year’s first-round pick, a full rebuild holds little appeal, and the front office is exploring immediate upgrades.
Brooklyn has been linked to Lakers free agent Austin Reaves, though league insiders widely expect him to stay in Los Angeles. The Nets could also pursue younger free agents or attempt to trade up in the draft, but clubs holding high selections have shown little interest in moving them. After several seasons in transition, Brooklyn is searching for a faster route back to relevance.
