Heat Remain Leading Suitor for Antetokounmpo, but Roster Questions Persist; Blazers Weigh Henderson Extension; Gafford Prioritizes Health for Mavericks

The Miami Heat are still viewed by numerous league sources as the favorite to land Giannis Antetokounmpo if the Milwaukee Bucks decide to trade the two-time MVP. However, The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported on “The Dan Patrick Show” that Antetokounmpo is uncertain about how Miami’s roster would look after a potential blockbuster deal.
According to Amick, the forward is concerned that the supporting cast could be depleted in any trade. A prospective Miami package is expected to center on Tyler Herro, Kelel Ware and Jaime Jaquez Jr. along with multiple draft picks, while Bam Adebayo is widely considered untouchable.
Amick added that a trade before the NBA Draft remains possible. He also mentioned the Boston Celtics as another team generating interest and noted that an unexpected suitor could still emerge.
Trail Blazers
Scoot Henderson’s contract status is one of Portland’s key offseason questions. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 draft becomes eligible for a rookie-scale extension this summer, yet Spotrac’s Keith Smith indicated the Trail Blazers may take another year to evaluate the guard instead of offering an immediate deal.
Henderson finished the season strongly and contributed in the playoffs, but injuries limited his overall impact and his outside shooting remains inconsistent. Portland’s backcourt is also crowded, with Damian Lillard expected to return next season. League observers believe the organization will gather more data on Henderson before committing long-term money, although trade speculation could follow.
Mavericks
Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford said he will not rush his recovery from the ankle injury that bothered him for much of last season. Speaking with reporters, Gafford explained he intends to be fully healthy before resuming on-court workouts.
“I don’t want to rush anything,” Gafford told the Dallas Morning News. The injury limited him to 55 games, during which he averaged 9.5 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks.
The veteran also addressed the arrival of new president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri, acknowledging that roster changes often come with new leadership. “It’s a business,” Gafford said. “I’m just sitting back and watching from afar.”
