New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson still intends to play in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday, even after surgery to repair a fractured right pinky, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Charania said on NBA Today that Robinson’s stance has not changed since first reporting the plan last Friday. The 26-year-old must still receive final clearance from the Knicks’ medical staff before taking the floor.
During Tuesday’s NBA Finals media day, Robinson did not speak with reporters. The 7-footer arrived without any visible protection on his right hand, but later practiced with a wrap on the injured finger. Video from the session showed him dribbling, passing and shooting.
Head coach Mike Brown told reporters before practice that Robinson has logged only individual, non-contact work since the injury. Brown said he does not yet know how the center will be listed on the team’s official injury report, which is due Tuesday evening.
The circumstances of the fracture remain unclear. Brown previously said the break did not occur during a game or practice, and Charania added Tuesday that the injury happened at Robinson’s home.
