The Dallas Mavericks acquired the draft rights to Spanish point guard Sergio de Larrea on Thursday night after a series of transactions that began with the New York Knicks selecting him at No. 25 overall.
At 10:38 p.m. ET, New York agreed to send de Larrea to Dallas in exchange for the No. 30 pick and two future second-round selections, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Moments later, the Knicks dealt the No. 30 choice to the Phoenix Suns, exiting the first round entirely.
By sliding from No. 24 to 25, then to 30, and ultimately out of the round, the Knicks created salary-cap flexibility by avoiding a guaranteed rookie-scale deal. In total, New York secured five second-round picks and cash considerations through the three trade-downs.
De Larrea, 20, is a 6-foot-5 guard who has spent his career with Valencia in Spain. Over 28 Liga ACB games in the 2025-26 campaign, he averaged 9.7 points, 3.7 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 18.3 minutes. Since the start of the 2024-25 season, he has connected on 41.2% of his three-point attempts across Liga ACB, EuroLeague and EuroCup play.
The Mavericks’ more flexible cap outlook could improve the chances that de Larrea joins the NBA for the 2026-27 season, though the club has not announced its immediate plans for the guard.
