The Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed to send the No. 29 overall selection in Tuesday night’s NBA Draft to the Sacramento Kings, receiving the No. 34 pick and a future second-rounder in return, multiple outlets reported.
ESPN’s Shams Charania noted that Sacramento intends to use the newly acquired first-round pick on UConn forward Alex Karaban.
Moving down five spots allows Cleveland to avoid adding another guaranteed rookie-scale contract to an already costly payroll while still remaining in position to select a prospect early in Wednesday’s second round.
Second-round choices are not bound by the NBA’s rookie salary scale, giving teams greater flexibility in negotiating terms. Team sources cited by Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor said the Cavaliers rated several players in the late-first to early-second range similarly and were open to trading back if an additional asset was included.
The future second-round pick heading to Cleveland is expected to convey in a later draft, according to the same report.
With the swap complete, the Cavaliers now control the No. 34 pick and will be among the first teams on the clock when the second round begins.
