The Dallas Mavericks have placed the past two No. 1 overall NBA Draft selections on the same roster, acquiring 2024 top pick Zaccharie Risacher from the Atlanta Hawks to join 2025 No. 1 choice Cooper Flagg.
The move immediately recalls the 1984-85 Houston Rockets, the first franchise to pair consecutive first overall selections. Houston selected Ralph Sampson in 1983 and Hakeem Olajuwon in 1984, creating a frontcourt tandem that became known as the original “Twin Towers.” Within two seasons, Sampson and Olajuwon led the Rockets to the 1986 NBA Finals, where they fell to the Boston Celtics in six games after upsetting the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.
At the outset of their partnership, Sampson—7-foot-4 and a three-time National Player of the Year at Virginia—was the focal point of coach Bill Fitch’s offense, while the 7-foot Olajuwon often lined up at power forward. Olajuwon later said the staff initially underestimated his offensive abilities, a perception that changed as he evolved into an MVP, two-time Defensive Player of the Year and two-time NBA champion in 1994 and 1995. Sampson’s trajectory was hindered by injuries, and Houston traded him in 1988.
Dallas’ new combination of the 6-foot-9 Risacher and the 6-foot-9 Flagg presents a modern parallel, though their development and tenure together remain uncertain in today’s fluid NBA landscape. Still, by uniting back-to-back top draft choices, the Mavericks have drawn a direct comparison to one of the league’s most memorable what-if stories.
