LeBron James plans to take several days before choosing his next team, ESPN’s Shams Charania said Thursday on the network’s “Get Up.” The four-time NBA champion, who left the Los Angeles Lakers at the start of free agency, is weighing offers but has no set timetable to commit.
“LeBron James is not in a rush right now to make a decision,” Charania noted. “He’s evaluating everything.” According to Charania, James’ main objective is joining a roster that can compete for a championship, and financial terms are secondary. Agent Rich Paul has fielded roughly a dozen pitches since the market opened.
Charania identified the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat as the most prominent suitors. Rumors linking the Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers have also circulated during the past 24 hours, though Charania did not reference those clubs during his appearance.
Golden State can offer its full non-taxpayer mid-level exception worth $15MM. Miami and Cleveland have tighter spending flexibility, but Paul has indicated that James’ satisfaction and pursuit of another title outweigh salary considerations.
Charania expects James to review proposals “over the next few days” before selecting what he views as the best competitive situation. For now, the league awaits his decision with no firm deadline in place.
