LeBron James has not yet announced where he will sign, but NBA executives say the Cleveland Cavaliers continue to lead the chase for the four-time MVP as free agency enters its final stretch.
Executives still favor Cleveland
Multiple team officials told Hoops Wire on Tuesday they believe Cleveland is the favorite despite interest from several contenders. Skepticism persists around the league that the Minnesota Timberwolves or Denver Nuggets can secure James, keeping the Cavaliers in the spotlight.
Warriors keep recruiting
Golden State remains active. According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green have been in direct contact with James, one of the few player-to-player pipelines available in the process. Even so, Slater noted that Warriors executives remain “fairly pessimistic” about their odds. He also dismissed talk that recently hired assistant coach Frank Vogel was brought in to lure James, saying the former Lakers coach was chosen for his defensive background and head-coaching résumé.
Decision timeline narrows
ESPN insider Shams Charania reported Monday that James has gathered almost all necessary information and is nearing a final choice. Charania listed the Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Timberwolves as the leading suitors, adding that finances will not determine the outcome. Instead, James is prioritizing championship potential and overall fit.
Chris Haynes of NBA on Prime echoed that assessment after speaking with James’s agent, Rich Paul, who said the 39-year-old superstar now holds all the data required to decide.
The league continues to wait for James’s announcement, which sources believe could arrive soon.
