The Los Angeles Lakers’ offseason officially began after a 53-win campaign ended against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the franchise now confronts a roster full of unanswered questions.
According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, nine Lakers hold either expiring contracts or player options, a group that includes LeBron James, Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura. The front office has long emphasized “optionality,” but that philosophy faces its toughest test this summer.
Cap space up to $47 million
If general manager Rob Pelinka lets most free agents walk, Los Angeles could open roughly $47 million in salary-cap room—an even larger figure if Reaves is not re-signed. That flexibility, however, comes with the risk of losing contributors the team already trusts.
Reaves at the center of the plan
Reaves, coming off a breakout season, is expected to decline his player option and enter free agency. The Lakers could spend their cap space first and then exceed the cap to bring him back, preserving his Bird rights.
LeBron’s future remains unclear
James, now 41, has not revealed whether he will pick up his player option. “When I know, you guys will know,” he said during the season. His decision will shape both the short-term competitiveness and long-term strategy of a roster being molded around Luka Doncic.
Building around Doncic
The blueprint alongside the star guard is straightforward: shooting, rim protection and athletic wings. Luke Kennard supplies outside shooting, but finding additional pieces in a thin free-agent market will be challenging.
Los Angeles could choose to offer short-term contracts to maintain flexibility or pursue bigger moves now using cap room and limited draft capital. Either approach centers on maximizing Doncic’s prime while waiting on the NBA’s all-time leading scorer to announce his plans.
