Karl-Anthony Towns has not recorded a single fourth-quarter point through the first three games of the Knicks’ second-round series against the Spurs, a trend that drew sharp criticism after New York’s 102-97 loss in Game 3. Head coach Mike Brown told ESPN’s Vincent Goodwill he is “extremely” dissatisfied with Towns’ lack of late touches and vowed to adjust the offense to keep the center involved for the full 48 minutes.
“I’ve got to continue trying to do a better job of getting him involved throughout the course of the game, as well as late,” Brown said.
ESPN analyst and three-time champion Danny Green noted on air that Towns rarely attacked smaller defenders in the post Monday, often drifting on the perimeter instead. Green added that Victor Wembanyama’s length complicates matchups but stressed Towns must stay aggressive.
Brunson’s Efficiency Dips
Jalen Brunson, New York’s primary scorer all season, is shooting just 37.0 percent in the series and has tallied 13 turnovers and 13 assists. According to the New York Post, the Knicks have been outscored by 13 points in Brunson’s 110 minutes on the floor, even though they lead the series 2-1. The offense has occasionally looked smoother without him, relying on quicker ball movement rather than isolation sets.
Anunoby Stays Hot
OG Anunoby provided steady production in Game 3, pouring in 28 points on 13 field-goal attempts. The forward converted face-up threes and contested drives over Wembanyama, telling NBA Insider Chris Haynes, “I’m aggressive no matter who’s guarding me … just being aggressive at all times.”
Alvarado’s New York Roots
Brooklyn native Jose Alvarado remains a fan favorite, writes Jeanette Settembre of the Post. Former coaches Joe Arbitello and Dan Klores recalled Alvarado’s humility and persistence; Klores said the guard once asked for help finding a trainer after doubting he would reach the NBA. Alvarado reportedly cried when the Pelicans finally offered him a roster spot.
The Knicks and Spurs resume the best-of-seven matchup with Game 4 on Thursday at Madison Square Garden.
