The Cleveland Cavaliers remain engaged in conversations about adding DeMar DeRozan or Jonathan Kuminga during the upcoming offseason, according to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson of ScoopB.com.
Robinson, citing multiple league sources, said Cleveland’s front office continues to evaluate both players and has identified separate reasons why each could fit the roster.
DeRozan’s scoring and long-standing ties
The 34-year-old DeRozan, entering free agency after three seasons with the Chicago Bulls, maintains a close friendship with Cavs guard James Harden. The two Southern California natives first crossed paths in grassroots basketball circles in Los Angeles and have stayed connected ever since, one source told Robinson.
On the floor, another source indicated DeRozan’s reliable mid-post game could supply Cleveland with a much-needed half-court scoring option to complement Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley.
Kuminga intrigue continues
Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga also remains on Cleveland’s radar. Team president Koby Altman is said to be intrigued by the 21-year-old’s athletic profile, and Kuminga’s relationship with current Cavaliers assistant coach Kenny Atkinson dates back to their shared time in the Bay Area.
Because Kuminga is extension-eligible, any acquisition would likely require a sign-and-trade deal. Robinson reported that several clubs are discussing possible trade frameworks, with one league source suggesting the Atlanta Hawks could view Cleveland as a more logical partner than the Los Angeles Lakers if talks advance.
Whether the Cavaliers ultimately land either player remains uncertain, but Robinson’s reporting underscores the organization’s ongoing search for roster upgrades ahead of next season.
