New York revamped its approach to Atlanta’s defense on Tuesday night, and Jalen Brunson responded with his most productive outing of the postseason. The guard poured in 39 points on 15-of-23 shooting as the Knicks rolled past the Hawks, 118-89, in Game 5 of their first-round series.
Atlanta coach Quin Snyder switched Dyson Daniels onto Karl-Anthony Towns after the center’s triple-double in Game 4. The change opened lanes for Brunson, who consistently attacked in space. “It’s like a chess match,” Brunson said. “If someone makes a move, you’ve got to make another move.”
New York’s defense has tightened since dropping narrow decisions in Games 2 and 3. Over the past two contests, the Knicks have limited the Hawks to 42.7 percent from the field and 27.7 percent from three-point range. Early series standout CJ McCollum was held to six points in Game 5.
Towns adjusts, stays productive
The Hawks’ adjustment did little to slow Towns, who finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds and six assists while operating as a hub in the half-court. “Sometimes the scoring gets more noticed than the passing,” the veteran big man said. “I’ve just got to continue to make the right play.”
Anunoby shines at both ends
OG Anunoby added 17 points, 10 boards and two steals, posting a plus-19 in 36 minutes. Towns labeled the forward “one of the best two-way players in the NBA” and predicted Anunoby will earn First Team All-Defense honors.
Alvarado re-enters rotation
Guard Jose Alvarado, who did not appear in the series opener, provided a spark off the bench with 12 points in 12 minutes. His opportunity came after Landry Shamet and Miles McBride struggled earlier in the matchup.
Game 6 is scheduled for Thursday, when the Knicks will try to build on consecutive dominant performances.
