Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr met with controlling owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy for roughly two hours on Monday, league sources told ESPN. The conversation, described as productive, focused on whether Kerr will remain on the bench for a 13th season.
No decision was reached, and the parties intend to reconvene next week, sources said. The Warriors were eliminated in Phoenix nearly two weeks ago, leaving both sides time to assess the franchise’s direction.
Kerr, 60, is scheduled for a previously planned golf trip later this week. People close to him say he remains conflicted about continuing, though one source noted, “It’s April. We don’t need to rush.”
The next key date on Golden State’s offseason calendar is the NBA draft lottery on May 10. The club enters in the No. 11 slot with a 9.4% chance to jump into the top four and a 77.6% likelihood of staying 11th. The pick is viewed internally as a significant asset for potential roster moves this summer—an element that factors into Kerr’s decision-making.
Team officials believe Kerr is still a strong fit for a playoff contender built around Stephen Curry and Draymond Green but may not be the ideal choice for a major rebuild. After the season-ending loss, Kerr acknowledged the possibility of change, saying, “I still love coaching, but I get it. These jobs all have an expiration date.”
According to team sources, the discussion is strictly a basketball matter involving Kerr’s enthusiasm for coaching, possible tweaks to the offensive approach and staff, and confidence in management’s ability to upgrade the roster in a competitive Western Conference.
The Warriors have not begun a coaching search, and sources indicated they will do so only if Kerr decides to step away.
