Jalen Brunson knocked down a tiebreaking free throw with 9.5 seconds left, and the New York Knicks escaped with a 105-104 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night in Game 2 of the NBA Finals.

The narrow road victory at Frost Bank Center gives New York a 2-0 edge in the best-of-seven series, which shifts to Madison Square Garden for Games 3 and 4.

Key performances

Karl-Anthony Towns led the Knicks with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Brunson and Mikal Bridges each scored 20. The Knicks have now won 13 consecutive postseason games and are two wins away from their first league title since 1973.

Victor Wembanyama poured in 29 points for San Antonio, 20 of them after intermission, and De’Aaron Fox added 20.

Late-game swing

New York held a 12-point cushion midway through the fourth quarter, but San Antonio surged ahead 104-102 when Wembanyama converted a three-point play with 57 seconds remaining—its first lead since the third period.

Brunson answered with a driving basket to level the score, then drew a foul following a Wembanyama turnover and split the ensuing free throws, putting the Knicks in front for good.

After a timeout, Fox set up Wembanyama for a mid-range jumper that bounced off the rim as time expired, sealing New York’s one-point win.

Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
