Jusuf Nurkic says he plans to stay in the NBA, dismissing recent speculation that he might continue his career in Europe when he becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer.
The 31-year-old center addressed the rumors during an appearance on the “X and Os Podcast,” where he was asked about Serbian club Partizan. “I didn’t have an offer from the black-and-whites. I wish I had,” the Bosnian big man said.
Nurkic later clarified on social media that his podcast comments referred to the early stages of his career, writing, “My statement was taken out of context… I have great respect for @PartizanBC, but I have no intention of leaving the NBA.”
The veteran spent the season with the Utah Jazz, averaging 10.9 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 26.4 minutes over 41 games (36 starts). His year ended after the All-Star break because of nasal surgery, and he previously missed time with a toe injury while also logging several DNP-CDs.
Utah explored trade options for Nurkic before the Feb. 5 deadline due to his expiring $19.3 million contract. According to multiple reports, he would like to re-sign with the Jazz, though it is unclear whether the club will pursue a new deal. Any return is expected to involve a reduced salary.
Nurkic has played in the NBA since the 2014-15 season and will enter free agency for the first time since his current contract expires.
