The Los Angeles Lakers have promoted Zach Guthrie to assistant coach on head coach JJ Redick’s staff, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Tuesday.
Guthrie, 36, will also oversee the club’s player development program. He spent the past two seasons guiding the organization’s G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, compiling a 26-10 record in 2025-26 and securing the Western Conference’s top playoff seed before a conference-final loss to the Stockton Kings.
A native of Texas, Guthrie joined Los Angeles after three years as an assistant with the Washington Wizards. His NBA résumé also includes stints with the Mavericks, Jazz, Magic and Spurs.
The promotion comes as the Lakers reshape their roster with younger veterans Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes and Sandro Mamukelashvili, along with first-round pick Cameron Carr (No. 24 overall). Guthrie will be responsible for helping each player maximize his development.
The Lakers’ G League team is relocating and will compete as the Coachella Valley Lakers beginning in the 2026-27 season.
