The trade deadline deal that delivered Jaren Jackson Jr. to Salt Lake City was widely viewed as a signal that Utah’s four-year rebuild could be nearing its end. Yet the organization is deliberately avoiding talk of a playoff push for 2026-27.
“We all want to improve,” head coach Will Hardy said. “How big is that step? I don’t know yet. There are so many factors that are not in our control when you start stacking yourselves up.”
Basketball operations chief Austin Ainge struck a similar tone, stressing summer roster work over postseason projections. Utah spent most of its remaining cap space acquiring Jackson, limiting flexibility for additional moves. “We made a big move with Jaren,” Ainge noted. “We’ll always be aggressive looking to improve the team, but we don’t have tons of cap space unless some amazing opportunities present themselves.”
Jackson’s role still unclear after brief debut
Jackson appeared in only three games before undergoing season-ending surgery to remove a growth from his left knee. Hardy said the limited sample size prevented him from testing how the former Grizzlies big man fits at both center and power forward. “The clarity is not great,” the coach admitted. “It all looks good on the board, but you do need to test certain things.”
Bailey, Kessler headline internal priorities
Second-year wing Ace Bailey is expected to shoulder a larger workload next season. The Jazz want the 2025 first-rounder to add strength so he can handle more ball-handling duties and improve defensively on the perimeter. “It’s the weight room—he’s going to live in there,” Ainge said.
Restricted free agent Walker Kessler is next on Utah’s agenda. The front office hopes to finalize a new contract with the 7-footer quickly, then turn to other decisions. Veteran big men Jusuf Nurkić and Kevin Love have expressed a desire to return, but their futures will depend on cost.
According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the club can re-sign Kessler and extend guard Keyonte George on a rookie-scale deal without crossing the luxury-tax threshold.
