Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown said Sunday that game officials carried “an agenda” against him during Boston’s first-round series loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Speaking on his personal Twitch stream, Brown argued that he was not officiated the same as other players and pointed to a series of calls he believes illustrate bias. “They clearly had an agenda,” he said. “Everybody does the same move, but if Jaylen does it, it’s an offensive foul.”
Flopping accusation aimed at Joel Embiid
Brown also criticized Sixers center Joel Embiid, calling the former MVP “one of the best bigs in basketball history” but accusing him of repeatedly flopping. “It has ruined our game,” Brown asserted.
Offensive fouls at the center of complaint
The 27-year-old guard was whistled for 10 offensive fouls in the seven-game matchup—double the total of any other player in the opening round. During the regular season he drew 40 offensive fouls, second only to New York Knicks forward Karl-Anthony Towns.
Brown showed his Twitch audience a clip of Philadelphia forward Paul George appearing to extend an arm on a drive, arguing that identical plays resulted in different rulings. “Same move. Same refs. If it’s me, it’s an offensive foul,” he said.
Series statistics
Overall foul calls were nearly even, with officials assessing 136 fouls to the Celtics and 132 to the 76ers. Brown averaged a career-best 25.7 points while shooting 45.5% from the field and 40.5% from three, and he averaged 3.0 fouls per game.
History of clashes with officials
Sunday’s remarks follow several run-ins Brown had with referees during the season. He voiced general frustration about officiating in November, singled out veteran referee Curtis Blair after a Jan. 11 loss to San Antonio, and blasted the crew following a March 10 ejection against the Spurs. The NBA fined him $35,000 for the March comments.
On Twitch, Brown suggested some referees “need to be investigated” and claimed three of those officials worked the final three games of the Philadelphia series.
