The Washington Wizards are reportedly giving serious thought to selecting Kansas guard Darryn Peterson with the first overall choice in next week’s NBA Draft, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
League observers had long viewed forward AJ Dybantsa as the likely No. 1 pick, but Stein wrote that a well-placed source believes Washington’s interest in Peterson has intensified. While this does not confirm that Peterson has overtaken Dybantsa, it suggests the gap between the two prospects is far narrower than previously assumed.
Peterson opened the college season as a projected top selection before hamstring issues and cramping slowed his momentum, allowing Dybantsa to emerge as the perceived front-runner. Recent chatter indicates the conversation is shifting once again.
ESPN reporters Jeremy Woo and Shams Charania have also indicated that the Wizards have effectively narrowed their decision to Peterson and Dybantsa. Stein added that forwards Cameron Boozer and Caleb Wilson are not expected to receive consideration for the first pick.
Possible Smokescreens Ahead of Draft Night
With draft week approaching, front offices are known to float conflicting information. Stein acknowledged that the renewed buzz around Peterson could be strategic, particularly with the Utah Jazz holding the No. 2 pick and still weighing Peterson, Dybantsa or Boozer depending on Washington’s choice.
For now, the Wizards continue to keep their plans under wraps, maintaining intrigue as the countdown to draft night continues.
