The Charlotte Hornets devoted their Las Vegas Summer League schedule to gauging growth in both this year’s and last year’s draft classes, head coach Blaine Mueller said after the team wrapped up five games at Thomas & Mack Center.
Second-year trio given expanded duties
Liam McNeeley ran the offense as primary ball-handler, a test of his ability to act as main facilitator. Mueller highlighted the 6-7 guard’s three-level scoring and praised several one-on-one defensive stands against New Orleans.
Sion James also received minutes at the point as Charlotte looks for a dependable backup behind Coby White.
Ryan Kalkbrenner was used as a playmaker out of the post and constantly directed pick-and-roll coverages. Mueller noted an uptick in the 7-1 center’s physical finishes, including multiple and-one baskets.
Rookie center makes immediate impact
First-round pick Hannes Steinbach closed the week with 22 points and 11 rebounds on Friday. The 6-11, 248-pound German center welcomed the club’s new emphasis on size and physicality, saying he “loves making contact.” Charlotte experimented with twin-tower combinations featuring Steinbach alongside Kalkbrenner.
Salaun works to secure rotation spot
Forward Tidjane Salaun, the No. 6 selection in the 2024 draft, returned for a second Summer League stint. Coaches want tighter defensive coverage execution and quicker offensive reads on closeouts before committing regular-season minutes, Mueller explained.
Ajayi earns praise on two-way deal
Undrafted rookie Michael Ajayi, now on a two-way contract out of Butler, impressed staff with his versatility. The 6-7 forward accepted a limited offensive role while capably guarding multiple positions, according to Mueller.
The Hornets finished Summer League intent on carrying those developmental points into training camp.
