The Miami Heat have completed a blockbuster agreement to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks and are now turning their attention to building a championship roster around Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
Reporting from Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald indicates that front-office discussions are already underway as the organization evaluates its next moves.
Key roster decisions loom
The immediate question centers on Andrew Wiggins and Norman Powell. Wiggins, a versatile two-way wing who shot above 41 percent from three-point range last season, and Powell, one of the league’s more reliable perimeter scorers when healthy, are both viewed as solid complements to the new star duo. Jackson wrote that keeping both players is “a realistic possibility.”
Potential free-agency targets
Miami is expected to have access to its full mid-level exception, giving the club flexibility to add depth and shooting in free agency. Preliminary names linked to the Heat include Coby White, Anfernee Simons, Dean Wade, Kelly Oubre Jr., Luke Kennard, Quentin Grimes and Keon Ellis.
Additional spending tools
The Heat also hold a bi-annual exception and a trade exception generated by the Duncan Robinson deal, providing further avenues to bolster the roster.
LeBron James speculation
Outside chatter has already surfaced about a possible run at LeBron James. While Jackson noted that “nothing can be completely ruled out,” league sentiment suggests a reunion between James and Miami remains unlikely.
After years of searching for another top-tier star to pair with Adebayo, the Heat have finally landed one. The priority now is to surround Antetokounmpo with sufficient shooting, depth and veteran presence to maximize what could become one of the NBA’s most formidable tandems.
