Guard CJ McCollum scored 32 points, including six in the final two minutes, to push the Atlanta Hawks past the New York Knicks in Monday’s Game 2 at Madison Square Garden. The 112-107 victory tied the first-round series at one game apiece.
Playoff experience pays off
While forward Jalen Johnson was Atlanta’s lone All-Star during the regular season, head coach Quin Snyder turned to the 11-year postseason résumé of the 34-year-old McCollum on Monday. “I’ve watched him do that when he was in Portland,” Snyder said. “You can lead by how you play.”
McCollum, acquired for Trae Young at the trade deadline, is in the final season of his contract. Unless the sides reach an extension by June 30, he will enter unrestricted free agency in July.
Johnson adjusts after slow start
Johnson missed his first four shots and went 0-for-4 in the opening half, but the forward rebounded after intermission, hitting 6-of-8 attempts. Snyder praised the 22-year-old’s ability to impact games beyond scoring, citing his transition play and adaptability to New York’s defensive schemes.
Risacher stays ready
Rookie wing Zaccharie Risacher, the former No. 1 overall pick, has logged only two minutes in the series after seeing reduced time late in the regular season. Speaking to French outlet BeBasket after Game 1, the 20-year-old said he is focused on remaining prepared: “You can’t let yourself get down by things you can’t control… I’m trying to make it a strength.”
Award recognition for Alexander-Walker
Guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker is one of three finalists for the NBA’s Most Improved Player award. The league will announce the winner Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET during Amazon Prime’s playoff coverage.
The series shifts to Atlanta for Game 3 on Thursday night.
