Shams Charania says breaking Gilgeous-Alexander MVP news early is simply his job

ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania on Monday defended releasing word that Oklahoma City guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had captured his second consecutive Most Valuable Player award before the league’s scheduled primetime announcement.

Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Charania acknowledged the pushback he received from fans and members of Prime Video’s NBA studio crew, who argued he should have waited for the official reveal. “When I get news, when I get information, if I’ve vetted it, my job is to report the news,” he said. “Part of me is like, what are we talking about here?”

The complaint centered on timing. The NBA had planned to unveil the honor during a broadcast segment Sunday night, and Prime’s on-air team jokingly urged the reporter to “go to brunch, you nerd” instead of posting the scoop.

Charania maintained that speed is an essential part of the insider business. Reporters, he noted, are paid to deliver confirmed information as soon as it is verified, regardless of television packaging plans.

The debate resurfaced Monday afternoon when Charania joined ESPN’s NBA Today. Host Malika Andrews introduced him as arriving “fresh off brunch,” eliciting laughs from the panel and underscoring ongoing tension between real-time reporting and broadcast theatrics.

The incident mirrors previous friction surrounding advance reporting of NBA Draft selections and other league announcements, raising questions about how networks balance exclusive content with the rapid pace of digital news.
