Cleveland guard Sam Merrill will not play in Thursday’s Game 2 against Detroit at Little Caesars Arena, the Cavaliers announced. The sixth-year wing was originally listed as questionable after straining his left hamstring during Tuesday’s Game 1 loss.
Merrill, 29, enjoyed a career-best regular season after re-signing with Cleveland on a four-year, $37 million contract last summer. He averaged 12.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 26.5 minutes per game while hitting 42.1% of his three-point attempts. Merrill skipped Wednesday’s practice, and the early designation suggests the team hopes the injury is not long-term.
Detroit will also be short-handed. Forward Kevin Huerter has been ruled out with a strained left adductor sustained on April 27 in Game 4 of the first-round series against Orlando. The 27-year-old, who is set to reach free agency this offseason, was downgraded from doubtful to out for Thursday’s matchup.
