The Chicago Bulls have obtained permission to interview Cleveland Cavaliers associate head coach Johnnie Bryant for their open head-coaching position, according to Marc J. Spears of Andscape.
Bryant, 39, has spent the past two seasons on Kenny Atkinson’s staff in Cleveland, helping the Cavaliers reach the Eastern Conference finals before their sweep by the New York Knicks. His growing reputation around the league has made him a frequent name in coaching searches, and many executives believe he is close to landing his first lead job.
Before joining the Cavaliers, the Oakland native served four years as associate head coach of the New York Knicks under Tom Thibodeau. He previously worked several seasons with the Utah Jazz, earning praise for player development and building a strong relationship with guard Donovan Mitchell.
Last summer Bryant was a finalist for the Phoenix Suns’ head-coaching vacancy, a job that ultimately went to former Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott. A former University of Utah guard, Bryant now owns 12 years of NBA assistant coaching experience.
