Giannis Antetokounmpo’s tenure in Milwaukee is over. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Wednesday that the Bucks have reached an agreement to trade the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player to the Miami Heat.
Miami will receive Antetokounmpo, 31, along with veteran forward Bobby Portis. In return, Milwaukee secures guard Tyler Herro, rookie center Kelel Ware, forward Jaime Jaquez Jr., guard Kasparas Jakucionis, the No. 13 overall pick in this year’s draft, two future first-round selections, a first-round pick swap and a second-round pick, according to Charania.
The draft compensation consists of the Heat’s unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 pick swap, and Miami’s 2033 second-rounder.
Long-Running Trade Drama Ends
Antetokounmpo’s departure closes a year-long saga that began last offseason when the Knicks and Bucks briefly explored a deal after the forward expressed interest in New York. As Milwaukee stumbled out of the gate in 2025-26 and Antetokounmpo dealt with knee issues, trade speculation intensified.
Before the February deadline, the Bucks talked with multiple teams, including Golden State, Minnesota, New York and Miami. The organization ultimately held firm, but league sources said the Heat’s offer remained the one Milwaukee viewed most seriously.
Frayed Relationship With Bucks Leadership
Tension escalated late in the season when co-owner Wes Edens told ESPN the club would either extend or trade the superstar. Antetokounmpo later disagreed with team doctors over his knee status, prompting an NBA investigation that eventually cleared the Bucks.
Entering the final guaranteed season of his contract, Antetokounmpo wielded leverage in trade talks. Co-owner Jimmy Haslam stated in May that the upcoming draft served as the unofficial deadline for a resolution, and the deal was struck less than 24 hours before the first round.
Bidding War Narrowed to Miami and Boston
League insider Chris Haynes reported that Antetokounmpo would have considered a long-term extension with Miami, Boston or Minnesota. The Timberwolves lacked draft capital after prior trades, leaving the Heat and Celtics as finalists. Boston’s package reportedly featured All-Star wing Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks, but Milwaukee favored Miami’s blend of young talent and draft assets.
The Heat now pair Antetokounmpo with their existing core, while the Bucks pivot to a youth-focused rebuild built around Herro and a trove of future picks.
