The Athletic’s annual pre-draft survey collected fresh opinions from NBA scouts, front-office personnel and college coaches on the leading names in the 2026 class. The three-part series, released this week, breaks down guards, wings and big men expected to headline Tuesday night’s first round.
Peterson Viewed as High-Floor Backcourt Option
An Eastern Conference scout described Kansas guard Darryn Peterson as a near lock for the top two. According to the evaluator, Peterson’s all-around polish, ambidextrous finishing and calm demeanor give him a “Klay Thompson–level ceiling” and a floor higher than any other guard on the board. The scout added that Peterson rarely seeks attention and carries himself more like Kawhi Leonard than Kobe Bryant.
Dybantsa Gets No. 1 Vote From Eastern Executive
A separate executive based in the East said he would choose Duke wing AJ Dybantsa first overall. At 6’10” with an explosive first step, Dybantsa can create fouls “because defenders can’t stay in front,” the executive noted. The official praised Dybantsa’s ability to guard four positions and predicted the teenager will anchor an NBA offense once his jump shot catches up. Although the executive acknowledged that Dybantsa currently relies on athleticism rather than anticipation on defense, he believes the forward’s size and tools will prevent him from becoming a playoff target.
Boozer Lauded for IQ and Passing
The same executive favors Duke big man Cameron Boozer over other frontcourt prospects for the projected No. 3 slot. Boozer, listed at 6’9”, drew praise for elite processing, stand-still passing from multiple spots on the floor and reliable outside shooting. While the source does not project Boozer as a primary scoring option on a title team, he sees the forward as a potential second or third cornerstone thanks to his motor, rebounding and ability to ignite fast breaks with pinpoint outlet passes.
Additional quotes in the series cover other probable lottery selections, including forward Caleb Wilson, who is generally ranked fourth. All three stories are available free of charge on The Athletic alongside Sam Vecenie’s draft guide.
