LAS VEGAS — The opening days of NBA Summer League delivered encouraging signs for several franchises, highlighted by Cameron Boozer’s strong first outing for the Memphis Grizzlies, Andre Drummond’s arrival in New York, and the Utah Jazz adding guard Trey Alexander on a two-way contract.
Grizzlies pleased with Boozer’s all-around debut
No. 3 overall pick Cameron Boozer posted 15 points, four rebounds and four assists in Memphis’ lopsided win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, impressing scouts with his vision and decision-making, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reported. The former Duke forward energized the crowd by dunking over 7-foot-3 rookie Aday Mara early in the game and said afterward that he already feels “comfortable” within the Grizzlies’ system.
“It’s still an adjustment … but I felt good with this group,” Boozer said. He added that embracing a leadership role is something he has “had my whole career,” stressing the importance of proving he deserves that responsibility.
Drummond eager to replace Robinson in New York
Veteran center Andre Drummond, who signed a one-year contract with the defending champion Knicks, acknowledged he will fill the vacancy left by injured starter Mitchell Robinson. “Mitchell Robinson was a huge loss for them,” Drummond told reporters, via Mika Ortiz. “I bring in a similar talent, similar energy, but I’m a veteran. I know what it takes to win.” The New York native said returning home to contribute to a contender is “exciting.”
The Knicks will also use Summer League to evaluate second-round pick Mohamed Diawara and former first-rounder Pacome Dadiet, according to the New York Post’s Zach Braziller.
Jazz add Trey Alexander on two-way contract
The Utah Jazz continued shaping their roster by reaching a two-way agreement with guard Trey Alexander, Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported. Alexander, 23, appeared in nine games for the New Orleans Pelicans last season, averaging 5.2 points on better than 51 percent shooting. He excelled in the G League, posting nearly 24 points per contest and earning Rookie of the Year honors with Denver’s affiliate in 2024.
Alexander joins Blake Hinson and Tamar Bates as Utah’s current two-way players, though those spots typically remain fluid during the season.
