The Portland Trail Blazers are positioning themselves for a potential run at Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo if the two-time MVP is made available this offseason, reporter Bill Oram of The Oregonian wrote.

Any pursuit, according to the report, would hinge on Antetokounmpo’s willingness to sign an extension with his new team, a factor expected to shape the entire market for the 29-year-old forward.

Portland’s interest aligns with its current roster strategy. Franchise cornerstone Damian Lillard is under a team-friendly contract, and pairing him with Antetokounmpo would give the organization a clear competitive direction. The approach would also mark a signal of urgency from ownership led by Tom Dundon, who is known for investing in players while remaining cautious in other expenditures.

Whether Antetokounmpo would view Portland as a winning destination remains uncertain. The Western Conference is currently dominated by youthful contenders such as the Oklahoma City Thunder, built around Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and the San Antonio Spurs, headlined by Victor Wembanyama. Any trade for Antetokounmpo would also require a significant outgoing package, potentially weakening the roster meant to support him.

For now, the Blazers are tied 1-1 with the Spurs in their current playoff series. Wembanyama’s status for Game 3 is still unclear as he remains in concussion protocol.
