Anthony Edwards Presses Timberwolves for Off-Season Roster Upgrades

Guard Anthony Edwards wants the Minnesota Timberwolves to make significant roster improvements this summer, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported during the network’s NBA Finals coverage.

Windhorst indicated that Edwards’ stance may be influenced by watching former teammate Karl-Anthony Towns compete for a title with the New York Knicks following his trade from Minnesota.

Towns, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft, spent nine seasons as the Timberwolves’ focal point before being dealt to New York just before the 2024/25 campaign. He has earned All-Star selections in both years with the Knicks, guiding them to last season’s Eastern Conference Finals and now the NBA Finals.

Minnesota acquired Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo in that trade. Both have produced strong back-to-back seasons, helping the Wolves reach the 2025 Western Conference Finals. This year, Minnesota fell in the second round to San Antonio after DiVincenzo suffered a ruptured Achilles.

Windhorst did not specify the type of moves Edwards is seeking. The front office’s notable mid-season addition was guard Ayo Dosunmu from Chicago, and re-signing him is expected to be a key off-season priority.

Edwards, a four-time All-Star, is under contract for three more seasons at $48.9 million, $52.3 million and $55.7 million, limiting his leverage to force a move. He is extension-eligible this summer but missed the 65-game threshold necessary for All-NBA consideration, making him eligible only for a two-year deal worth about $122 million. An All-NBA nod next year would position him for a four-year, $300 million supermax offer.

The Timberwolves already owe Rudy Gobert $36.5 million, Randle $33.3 million, Jaden McDaniels $26.2 million and Naz Reid $23.3 million for 2026/27. Any major addition could drive the team back over the second apron.

Head coach Chris Finch told KFAN he expects Minnesota to be active on the trade market and expressed confidence in president of basketball operations Tim Connelly, along with owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, to keep the roster competitive.
