Golden State officials no longer believe they are serious contenders to sign free-agent forward LeBron James, ESPN’s Anthony Slater said on the July 22 edition of “NBA Today.”
“They’ve been given no sign or hint that it’s going to happen,” Slater reported, noting that team executives expected some indication by now if the four-time MVP were leaning toward the Bay Area.
According to Slater, Stephen Curry has spoken directly with James during the process, and Draymond Green recently vacationed with him. Despite those personal connections, the franchise remains unconvinced it is high on James’ list.
Golden State is still reserving a roster spot in case circumstances change, but team planners are operating under the assumption that the 20-time All-Star will sign elsewhere.
James informed the Los Angeles Lakers three weeks ago that he would not return, yet he has offered no public timeline for choosing his next team. League sources continue to mention the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers as prominent suitors, while no clear favorite has emerged.
