PHILADELPHIA — Free-agent guard Anfernee Simons has committed to a two-year, $12.3 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to multiple league sources.
The agreement, first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, includes a player option for the second season. Philadelphia will complete the signing using the remaining balance of its non-taxpayer mid-level exception after allocating a portion of the MLE to forward Dean Wade earlier in the week.
With Simons onboard, the Sixers will sit roughly $3.4 million below the first-apron hard cap and have 14 players under contract, cap analyst Yossi Gozlan of The Third Apron noted.
Veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein confirmed that Philadelphia’s offer exceeded those made by the Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat, while the Dallas Mavericks also showed interest. Golden State, awaiting a decision from LeBron James, extended only a minimum-salary proposal, league sources told ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel. Simons was unwilling to accept less than $6 million annually.
The 25-year-old guard averaged 22.6 points and 5.5 assists for Portland last season before entering unrestricted free agency.
