NEW ORLEANS — Newly hired head coach Jamahl Mosley said he intends to expand Zion Williamson’s role as a facilitator while installing an “unapologetically physical” identity for the New Orleans Pelicans.

Speaking at his introductory news conference on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Mosley called the 25-year-old forward a “high-IQ playmaker” whose skills have yet to be fully tapped.

“He hasn’t even scratched the surface of things he can do,” Mosley told reporters. “Opening the floor for him to attack, putting him in different spots, letting him make the right reads—those are areas we can grow.”

Mosley arrives after four seasons with the Orlando Magic, where he reached the playoffs three straight years but never advanced past the first round. Orlando dismissed him earlier this month following a seven-game first-round loss to Detroit.

He inherits a Pelicans squad that has won 26 and 21 games over the past two seasons. Williamson averaged 21.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and shot 60% in 62 appearances last year, though durability remains a concern; the 2019 No. 1 pick has played 30 games or fewer in three of his seven campaigns and missed the entire 2021-22 season.

“Giving him space to live at the free throw line and stay aggressive is key,” Mosley added. “But it all starts with keeping everyone healthy.”

Executive vice president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said the franchise spent “hours and hours” interviewing candidates before selecting Mosley. Dumars credited owner Gayle Benson for providing the resources needed to assemble the new staff.

The roster blends veterans Dejounte Murray, Saddiq Bey and Herb Jones with young pieces such as Trey Murphy III, Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen. Mosley highlighted the group’s defensive versatility, emphasizing daily habits over shortcuts.

“Whether you label it a rebuild or being on the cusp, we’ll work every day to become the best versions of ourselves on and off the court,” he said.
