New York — A handful of New York Knicks supporters were taken into custody late Tuesday, June 4, after celebrations over the team’s Game 1 win in the NBA Finals erupted into disorder during a watch party at Madison Square Garden, police said.
Authorities did not immediately release an exact arrest tally but confirmed that “multiple” fans face charges connected to disorderly conduct and related offenses. The incident unfolded as thousands gathered inside the arena for the first official Garden watch party permitted in several weeks, following recent easing of crowd restrictions.
Officers stationed at the venue intervened when post-game revelers spilled into concourses and nearby streets, igniting fireworks and climbing light poles, according to a preliminary police report. No serious injuries were reported.
Madison Square Garden representatives said security protocols had been reinforced for the event, but the unexpectedly rowdy celebration “surpassed anticipated levels.” Additional measures are expected for future watch parties as the best-of-seven series continues.
The Knicks’ victory gives the franchise an early 1-0 edge in its first Finals appearance since 1999. Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday night, with another sold-out watch event planned at the Garden.
