The New York Knicks punched their ticket to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999 on Monday night, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani wasted little time turning the moment into a playful jab at the vanquished Cleveland Cavaliers.
Moments after New York’s 130-93 Game 4 victory completed a 4-0 sweep in the Eastern Conference finals, Mamdani tagged the city’s sanitation department on social media and wrote, “I’d like to report a sweep.” The department responded, “CLEAN UP IN CLEVELAND!!”
The Knicks’ win at Madison Square Garden marked their 11th straight playoff victory and second consecutive postseason sweep. Mamdani, the city’s 112th mayor, has been a visible supporter throughout the run; he attended Game 2 from the upper level of the Garden and previously joked about former Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young while discussing first-round ticket prices, saying, “I blame Trae Young. I think it’s always important to blame Trae Young.”
New York now awaits the winner of the Western Conference series between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder. Game 1 of the NBA Finals is scheduled for June 3, giving Mamdani plenty of time to craft another quip should the Knicks add a championship to their historic postseason surge.
