DETROIT — The Orlando Magic seized a 47-40 lead on the Detroit Pistons with 6:04 left in the second quarter Sunday in the opener of their Eastern Conference first-round series.

Detroit’s top response came from guard Cade Cunningham, who recorded nine points, two assists and a rebound. Rookie guard Ausar Thompson chipped in two points and snagged a pair of boards.
Through the first 18 minutes, the Magic hit 46 percent of their shots and 27 percent from long range. The Pistons were at 39 percent overall and 36 percent from deep. Orlando outrebounded Detroit 20-17 and committed three turnovers to the home team’s six.
Banchero’s inside finish at the 6:18 mark gave Orlando its largest lead at 47-40 moments before both teams used a timeout and exchanged substitutions. Detroit coach Monty Williams inserted Isaiah Stewart and Kevin Huerter, while Orlando’s Jamahl Mosley brought in center Goga Bitadze.
Game 1 is being televised nationally on NBC/Peacock from Little Caesars Arena. The series remains in Detroit for Game 2 before shifting to Orlando for Games 3 and 4 if necessary.
