LeBron James has drawn up a three-item agenda that will steer his thinking when he weighs free-agency options next summer, the New York Post reported on July 23, 2026.

The brief report did not detail the contents of the list, but noted that the four-time NBA champion plans to evaluate every potential destination against the same trio of benchmarks before committing to a new contract.

James, 41, owns a player option for the 2026-27 season. If he declines that option, the Los Angeles Lakers forward would enter the market as an unrestricted free agent for the first time since 2018.

The NBA’s all-time scoring leader last signed a two-year extension with the Lakers in 2024. That deal included the player option that could allow him to test free agency after his 23rd NBA season.

League executives are expected to monitor James’ decision closely; any club hoping to sign him will likely be measured against the undisclosed priorities laid out in his newly formed checklist.
