LOS ANGELES — Center Deandre Ayton will remain with the Los Angeles Lakers after exercising his $8.1 million player option, the team confirmed Monday.
The decision arrives as NBA free agency opens, ensuring the 7-footer stays under contract with Los Angeles for the 2026–27 season at the previously agreed salary figure.
Ayton, 27, averaged double-digit points and rebounds last year, providing size and interior scoring alongside the Lakers’ veteran core. By opting in, he bypasses unrestricted free agency and keeps the club’s front-court rotation intact heading into training camp.
Los Angeles acquired Ayton in a trade last summer. His option was part of the four-year agreement he signed after being selected No. 1 overall in the 2018 draft.
The Lakers open Summer League play next month before beginning preseason workouts in September.
