ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst said he “suspects” something happened behind the scenes shortly before Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown delivered an angry, officiating-focused news conference following Game 3 of the NBA Finals on June 9, 2026.

Speaking on ESPN, Windhorst did not claim inside knowledge but indicated he believes a private interaction or piece of information may have pushed Brown to criticize the referees so forcefully. The veteran journalist noted that coaches rarely launch such detailed attacks without a specific trigger.

Brown’s postgame remarks came at the Kings’ media podium after their Game 3 defeat. He questioned several calls and non-calls, repeatedly challenging the consistency of the crew assigned to the series.

Windhorst said the league will review Brown’s comments, as it routinely does when coaches publicly scrutinize officiating. Fines for such criticism are common, though no disciplinary decision had been announced as of Tuesday morning.
